Would it surprise you if I said that the origin of the wedding rings is NOT based on superstition and evil spirits? I certainly was! In fact, the wedding ring tradition began with the oh so romantic symbolism of…….ownership. And not just a “back off my man, sister, he’s taken” kind of ownership, but honest to goodness bought and paid for I own this woman. Sigh.
Back in the day….good old Rome and Greece would use a wedding ring as collateral to pay the father of the bride. Barf. But a woman’s rights thankfully progressed, the ring became less a symbol of ownership, and more a symbol of romance and love. Typically now the ceremony of the rings speaks of how just like the ring is a perfect circle that has no beginning and no end, so is the love you have for your partner. Or something along those lines!
